What is the Gospel of Mark About?

The Gospel of Mark is the second book of the New Testament and the shortest of the four Gospels. Traditionally attributed to John Mark, a companion of the apostles Peter and Paul, it is believed to record the eyewitness preaching of the Apostle Peter. Mark moves at a rapid pace, focusing on what Jesus did — his miracles, healings, and confrontations — more than on long speeches. Its central message is the identity of Jesus as the Son of God who came "not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." The Gospel builds from Jesus' powerful ministry in Galilee toward Jerusalem, the cross, and the empty tomb.

Why is the Gospel of Mark Unique?

Mark stands apart from the other Gospels in several ways that are popular quiz topics. It is the shortest Gospel and is widely held to be the earliest written. It is intensely fast-paced and action-focused — Mark repeatedly uses the word "immediately" to rush the reader from one event to the next. Rather than recording long sermons like Matthew's Sermon on the Mount, Mark concentrates on the deeds and miracles of Jesus. A recurring feature is the "Messianic Secret": Jesus often tells those he heals, and even the demons, not to reveal who he is — his true identity as the Son of God becomes fully clear only through the cross.
